Residential Property Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) Thresholds

(Effective: From 23 September 2022 to the 31st of March 2025)

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) must be paid if you buy a property in England or Northern Ireland that exceeds a certain threshold.

For first-time buyers, there is no stamp duty for properties up to £425,000 and only 5% on the portion between £425,001 to £625,000.

How long do you have to pay Stamp Duty?

You have 14 days to file your Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) return and pay any amount due. If you don’t submit a return and pay the tax within 14 days, you might find that HMRC will charge you a fine and interest.

What is the average stamp duty amount in Buckinghamshire?

According to the Land Registry in 2022 the average price of a property in Buckinghamshire was £483,511, which was similar to nearby Oxfordshire (£437,037) and Berkshire (£408,223), but was cheaper than Surrey (£528,694). That would mean that the average stamp duty cost in Buckinghamshire was around £11,675 for home movers and £2,925 for first time buyers.
